Precautions and proper use of essential oils Read before use
• Take care when using essential oils and use them in moderation.
• Essential oils should not be applied to the eyes, the eye area, or the ears. In case of contact rinse well with water.
• Essential oils must be diluted before being applied.
• Always keep essential oils out of children’s view and reach.
• Some oils can be irritating or sensitizing. Most essential oils are diluted in vegetable oil when applied to the skin. Before use, try a skin tolerance test in the crook of your elbow at least 48 hours before using the diluted oil on the skin. If you notice a reaction (redness, itching, stinging, etc.), do not use the mixture.
• Below oils are photosensitizing: Angelica, Bergamot, Celery, Lemon, Lime, Khella, Lovage, Mandarin, Orange, Blood Orange, Grapefruit, Tagetes, Lemon Verbena, and St. John’s wort infused oil. After applying these oils, avoid being exposed to the sun for 8 to 10 hours.
• Some essential oils can be irritant, especially sensitizing, or can present toxicity for a significant dose or for a long time.
• As a general rule, pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using essential oils. Also to be avoided by persons suffering from epilepsy or from hormone-sensitive cancers, hypersensitive persons, and in general persons suffering from health problems. Unless medically prescribed, do not use essential oils for babies and children under three years old. For children over 3 years old, use essential oils only under medical supervision.
• Never inject essential oils.
• If you suffer from respiratory allergies or asthma, avoid inhaling the diffusion of essential oils.
• Do not combine essential oils and medicinal treatments without medical supervision.
• Consult a doctor regarding any therapeutic indication before taking any essential oil orally. Essential oils should be diluted in good grade oil, honey, or sugar when taken orally.
• In case of accidental ingestion, rinse the mouth out with food-grade vegetable oil. Immediately call a poison center and take promptly medical advice.
Do not induce vomiting. If possible, this is advised to swallow 1 to 2 spoonfuls of food-grade vegetable oil in order to dilute the essential oil.
